Grammar of Paradise
Michel Buylen’s most recent exhibition Grammar of Paradise opens in Galerie De Zwarte Panter, Antwerp, on Saturday November 29, 2025 and runs until January 25, 2026
“Michel Buylen is one of the most important contemporary Belgian figurative artists. His oeuvre is characterized by a consistent attention to the pictorial elaboration of light, transparency, and reflection. Although at first glance his work may seem photorealistic to the average viewer, Buylen has developed a painting technique that transcends the real and generates an atmosphere of contemplative intensity. Essential features of his work include the layering of the painted surface, the treatment of light, the brushwork, the theme of transparency and reflection, and the way the human figure appears in his work as pure tenderness.
In a time when images circulate abundantly and fleetingly, Michel Buylens’ refined technique serves as a counter-image: slow, precise, and meditative. It reveals that painting is still capable of evoking the sublime.”
